I have always been under the impression that the elaborate diamond earrings worn by Queen Sonja (normally with the grand diamond tiara) came from Queen Alexandra, originally being pendant drops QA used on her necklaces.
In his article on the so called Malteser tiara Trond Noren Isaksen says that Queen Maud took her jewellery with her to England in 1938 and that after her death it remained at Windsor Castle until the time of the 1953 coronation. Although Isaksen does not list the jewels taken to England, I got the impression it was most of Queen Maud's grand jewels. http://trondni.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/royal-jewels-queen-mauds-maltese-cross.html
Today I discovered 2 photos of Crown Princess Martha wearing the earrings prior to her death. I don't have a date for the first photo
but this photo where she appears to be wearing the earrings was taken in 1950.
Can anyone shed any light on the mystery?
