The men who get it right, like the Duke of Edinburgh always did, use the method below for evening wear. I have often thought they must have a truncated version of the sash which is cut off at the armpit front and back and held by studs but that's guessing. For a uniform the sash is held under the shoulder epaulette(?). I'm not sure that epaulette is always the proper word when rank is displayed on the shoulders.
