The reason why the the old diamond jewellery look more vibrant and lively is maybe in the thing that you know that it is is old jewellery and understand all the great heritage behind these jewels.
But scientifically the old cut stones (pre 1900) are higher cut than today's modern brilliant cut diamonds. Therefore the old cut diamonds have more fire than the modern cut brilliants but also heavier and squarish look than the modern cut equivalents.
There is sometimes often a skilled photographer behind the good work of showing the old jewellery like in the book of Boucheron. Therefore I was so unhappy that the photographer who shot the recent royal jewels program took the shot so that the coloured gemstones where lit behind - making the stones look very watery and not sparkly and vibrant at all.
