I do believe it's entirely the prerogative of the Royal Collection to determine what pieces are to be called - with royal agreement I expect !!
So some of the "names" we have have been "invented" by authors who decided on something for appearance rather than structure, maybe.
I suppose it it wiser to stick to the traditional jargon of the jewellery profession.
