Mark Twain was describing Milan cathedral, in Innocents Abroad, and this massive tiara does have a laciness similar to that great Gothic building. I like your reference.
I wonder about the diamond necklace worn by Queen Frederica in Lorenzo's great series of pictures. It's another enormous jewel, and it looks as if it could be worn as a tiara. Does anyone know what has become of this necklace?
