so if this is the case, than all the speculation that King Constantine was in need of money is wrong because in such case, he would have sold this sapphire much earlier than 2003....

: Your previous assumption is a possibility:
: after the Queen's death, King Konstantinos
: kept it and sold it in 2003. The Greek RF
: can be the noble family.

: you beat me to it...
    :
: in 'Queens' Jewels' it says:
: "In June 1948 Prince Michale married
: Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma in athens.
: The young bride wore the diamond sautoir
: over her wedding gown, minus the fabulous
: sapphire which had already been sacrificed.
: It too had been sold to finance the deposed
: king's first months in exhile.
: Several years later, through an amusing
: twist of fate, this fascinating stone was to
: find its way into the collection of another
: Queen, equally as famous for her love of
: precious stones, Queen Frederika of Greece.
: To quote Hans Hadelhoffer in his book
: 'Cartier: Jewelers Extraordinatry', a Greek
: millionaire purchased the sapphire when the
: young Romanian king parted with it in 1948.
: Some time later he gave it to Frederika, his
: country's Queen and wife of King Paul I of
: Greece. She had it mounted as a pendant
: after which it became the centerpiece of a
: pearl and diamond necklace that the Queen
: wouls occasionally wear as a diadem."
    :
: At least we have the date when King Michael
: sold the sapphire...the question I have, who
    : inherited after Queen Frederika's
: death....and who is the Noble Family it was
    : sold by in 2003.

: Hans Nadelhoffer was jewelry expert for
: Christie's auction house in Geneva and spent
: three years immersed in the Cartier archives
: in Paris, New York, and London.
    :
: In her book : Cartier, Jewelers
    : Extraordinary, Harry N. Abrams, 1984, p. 234
    :
: he explained "a Greek billionaire who
: purchased the sapphire, when the King of
: Romania separates in 1948. Some time later,
: he offers to his sovereign, Frederika, wife
    : of king Paul 1° of Greece " .it's a
    : private gift.
    :
: Bought by Harry Winston, and sold by Cartier
    : ?.

    : Thanks Maridje....
    :
: I wonder why they never mentioned Queen
    : Frederika??
    :
    :
    :
: so what do we know so far...
    :
: 1. In 1922 Kind Ferdinand bought this
    : sapphire for Queen Maria
    :
: 2. In 1947 (possibly) King Michael (grandson
: of Queen Maria) sold the necklace to Harry
    : Winston.
    :
: 3. In 1948 just the diamond necklace was
    : seen and then vanished.
    :
: 4. In 1964 Queen Frederika wore this massive
: sapphire to her son's wedding
: festivities...(Was it a gift to her, or she
: purchased it from Harry Winston??)
    :
: 5. In 2003 the sapphire is sold by a Noble
    : family...
    :
: can we put pieces of this puzzle together?
    :
: Can we believe that the Noble family is
: really Ex King Constantine of Greece family?
