Thank you so much TMN, wonderful! Portugal has such a wonderful, intricate and magnificent history. And absolutely fascinating (in so many ways) monarchs and spouses.

Some of my favourite portuguese queens were portraited in this article: Philipa of Lancaster, the only english born princess to became Queen consort of Portugal, still much remembered today. She was the mother of the most outstanding generation of princes that Portugal ever had; Prince Henry the Navigator was one of her sons.

Dona Luiza of Gusman, from the spanish House of Medina Sidónia, was the first consort queen after the restauration of independence. The first Braganza Queen. She was vital to the independence process, and acted as regent after her husband died. Although spanish born, she strongly defended the interests of her new country. Still today considered one of the best consort queens in portuguese history, some remarkable sentences used today in portuguese comom lenguage (and legend) are said to have been hers at the turbulent times of the restauration: I rather be queen for a day than a duchess all my life!

And the unfortunate and sweet Queen Amélia, popular still today, althought not well understood in her years as portuguese Queen. A truly moving destiny the one of this royal lady, who had the misfortune to watch the assassination of her husband and eldest son, the death of her remaing son, the end of the monarchy, and survived all her loved ones.

From all the wonderful jewels in this article the only one that still remains for use of the royal family is the diamond tiara worn by Queen Amélia in that beautiful painting. It was a wedding gift from her beloved father-in-law, King D. Luís I, and was worn in May 13th 1995 by the present Duchess of Braganza, Dona Isabel, as a bride.
