Perhaps we can have a bit more about the carpet as it was a tour de force of embroidery.
Queen Mary was over seventy when she started making a carpet. In 1949 it was announced that the carpet would be sold to the highest bidder as Queen Mary's own contribution to the UK's export drive, and that its home should be an art gallery or public institution.
In her diary she wrote " This is my gift towards the National Debt. "
The carpet was displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum and then in leading American and Canadian cities. It then stayed in a vault in New York while bids were opened in London, which were narrowed down to seven.
In June 1950 a bid of 100,000 Canadian dollars, by the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire, was accepted.
The carpet then toured further, raising more dollars. After being shown at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto it was offered to the Government for the National Gallery of Canada.
Queen Mary's needle case was a wedding present.
