    The following passage from the book "Georgian Jewellery 1714-1830" by Ginny Redington-Dawes with Olivia Collings.
    Page 158

    "The execution of King Charles I in 1649 spawned a jewelry industry which produced carved rock crystals that were mounted over ciphers made of gold wire, displayed upon a background of hair work, and set in simple gold rings to show support for the monarchy...Called Stuart crystals, many of them pre-date the 1700s. but it was from these roots that the popularity of the eighteenth century memorial ring began to grow."
