Re: Connaught ruby tiara vs. Rosenborg sapphire tiara Archived Message

I believe that both tiaras, very similar in design but very different in construction, display variations of the 'Flaming Heart' motif, which was (and is) indeed a popular one in jewellery.

They don't come from the same jeweller; the Swedish ruby tiara, gift from King Edward VII to CP Margaret (of Connaught) was made in 1905 by jewellers Wolff and probably retailed by Garrard's.

On an aesthetic level, I agree that the ruby tiara is too high and not wide enough to be worn easily; on the other hand, the Rosenborg sapphire tiara does not have any connection between its motifs and the motifs themselves are not connected to the base but simply put on top of the ring.
IMHO, this makes them look a bit disparate and isn't exactly the most desirable way in terms of craftsmanship to create a tiara...

    Comparison:

: I have no notes on when it was made, but it
: certainly looks very similar in the motifs
: to Crownprincess Margaretha wedding gift
: rubi necklace tiara. I am no expert but
: could it be XIX century? I am not sure if I
: can call them festoon motifs, but I believe
: these wore very popular in victorian times.
    :
: The danish tiara seems more atractive and
: balanced to me because it has 5 larger
: motifs and circles well around the lady's
: head, while the swedish tiara has only 3
: motifs looking very much like a
: "wooper" on the front of the
: lady's head. To my eyes it looks a bit
: incomplete, althought the design is
: beautiful. It would look superb if two more
: similar motifs were added to the sides.

: is it made in the same era as the ruby tiara
    : in sweden?

: Thanks Martina. This was the first picture
: I've seen of the tiara with the turquoises
: on any of the ladies who wore it. I only
: have pictures of Princess Elizabeth wearing
: it with the cabochon saphires.
: This tiara is one of my favourites with
: saphires, I think it has a beautiful
: classical look. It would look stunning on
    : Crownprincess Mary's dark hair .

: I too have never seen this picture before.
    : So
: thanks for the link. But I have read before
: that the tiara can also be worn with
    : turquoises.

: Stig kindly posted several pictures of
    : Princess Caroline-Mathilde on the
: Scandinavian board, as rememberance of the
    : princess centenary.
    :
: One of the pictures, I had never seen, shows
: her saphire tiara, inherited from her aunt
: Princess Thyra, with the saphires replaced.
: Are those stones turquoises or are they
: pearls? Is this the tiara called as
    : "the saphire/turquoise tiara" on a
    : thread below?
    :
: This was the first picture I saw of this
: tiara been worn with other than the saphires
: as center of the diamond elements.
    :
: Also her beautiful diamond earrings in that
: picture are not familiar to me. Does someone
: knows which of her children is the present
: owner? I don't seem to remember Princess
    : Elizabeth wearing these.
