Queen Victoria wore a diadem and her little crown together for opening the Great Exhibition on 1 May 1851 .
A segment from the online Journal [Vol 31 p217] states - (sorry I can't decipher a word)
“ I forgot to mention that I wore a dress of pink(?) & silver, with a diamond ray Diadem & little crown at the back with 2 feathers, all the best of my jewels being diamonds. “
So Queen Alexandra, when Princess of Wales, had seen Queen Victoria wear the little crown like that and did a similar thing herself later on.
