I used to work as part of the Visitor services team; and I can tell you that the system involves a lot of queueing, no matter if you look well in advance or not. Having worked there, and knowing the system. My top tips are, prebook and have your tickets posted to you where possible. You often still have to queue for 20 min + just to collect your tickets on busy days; so have your tickets before. Also, if you can afford it, the best ticket is 'The Royal Day-out' which is a joint ticket for the State Rooms, The Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews. This is the best, as the tickets for the State Rooms and the Royal Mews are not timed; therefore you can go in whenever you want, as be aware if you have a timed ticket you cannot go in before that time and it is discouraged to even queue up before that allotted time. So an anytime entry is most advised. --Previous Message-- : If you want to book tickets (don't turn up : without) telephone & don't rely on the : online site, which often says that there is : only limited times available.
