I assume that the King and the Prince of Asturias wore offered this piece first in case they would be interested in buying it. Then the owner contacted the auction house.
Given the economical and social situation it would not be likely that they chose to buy such an expensive piece, even from a relative. A pity...
Queen Victoria Eugenia owned fabulous pieces, she was a lady that really loved jewelry.
I read sometime ago how, that when she had a flue or was not fealling all right, she would go and sit on her bed and ask her lady in waiting to bring her boxes of jewels. The Queen then spent a lot of time admiring her jewels, her favourites were her long diamond riviéres (los collares de chatones).

Many years ago on HOLA magazine the Count of Barcelona remembered in one interview what he felt as a litlle boy the first time he saw his mother dressed up for a gala evening. The litlle boy was mesmerized by all that glitter and he told his mother Queen Ena: "Mammy, you look like a Christmas tree!"
Well, the beautiful Queen Ena wearing some dazzling early XXth century gala dress, all covered in jewels glittering at candle light would be in fact stunning to see .
