As mentioned by gillw, the 'brooch' is fake - a crystal/glass version of the usual paper poppy which is sold for charity now as well, at a price of £25.

I believe you're correct about Princess Lilian's ruby flower not representing a poppy.

    : Princess Lilian's brooch doesn't seem like a
: poppy to me...poppies have diferent shape of
    : petals.
    :
    : I've spoted Duchess Catherine's rubi popy
: brooch also. Was it a gift from her husband,
: or from a regiment? I know nothing of its
    : provenance.

: I think the point is the British royals -
: ladies and men alike - are always seen to
: wear the poppies from the Royal British
: Legion - they now sell the sparkly ones too
: - in support not only of the commemoration,
: but of the charity fundraising involved.
    :
: Wearing a ruby studded poppy brooch every
: year would hardly convey the same message...

: During Armistice Day HRH the Duchess of

: It's quite strange that the only royal with
: a popy made from rubies & diamonds was
: the late Princess Lilian of Belgium. I would
: expected to see in the UK more ruby &
    : diamond poppy brooches.
