    Hello Claus

I have been looking for a more complete llist of Irene's wedding gifts for some time. Thank you for sharing. Could you supply the name of the newspaper and the date so that my notes attributing the research to you is accurate?

The Illustrated London News of May 26, 1888 page 560 reports the following:

"Of the wedding presents we may mention that Queen Victoria had given the Princess her whole Trousseau, besides a bracelet consisting of a sapphire set in four rings of brilliants, a quantity of costly English lace, a large Indian shawl, and a cover crocheted by the Queen's own hand. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh sent a jewel consisting of two interwoven horseshoes studded with brilliants; the Duke and Duchess of Connaught an Indian necklace of pearls and precious stones. The former governess of the late Prince Alice, the bride's mother, had given a touching souvenir of that lamented Princess, in the shape of a bracelet woven out her hair with a capsule on which one of her eyes is painted."

Translation can be quite tricky. I suspected that the "two together joined horses" was really two horseshoes linked together which was a fashionable brooch at the time. Also the two solitaire boutons are most likely large earrings?

    Laura
