I don't know anything else about this brooch but it shows clearly in the bigger version of that same photo you posted above and it is on the cover of the Leslie Field book (pub. in 1987 but reprinted in 1992). It's a golden circle with a 'cross' (with light blue sash showing beneath) in the center. It looks like a pin to hold the sash in place.
