Well, she belonged in an era when that was allowed, or to be expected, meaning that the wearing of many jewels was quite appropriate and position was expected to be marked by outward appearance. In the aristocaracy the men were enhanced by their women wearing grand jewels as a sign of wealth, taste, position or all three.
