Thanks PJ. It is the tiara that the Queen Mother wore so often for many years.
When it was made for Queen Victoria it contained opals. Years ago the Royal Collection site used to say -
The Oriental Circlet 1853 Diamonds, rubies, silver, gold Made for Queen Victoria Made for Queen Victoria and originally set with opals, possibly to the designs of Prince Albert. It was altered in 1888 and again in 1902, when Queen Alexandra had the opals replaced by rubies. This tiara was a particular favourite of Queen Elizabeth, and she wore it for the banquet at the British Embassy, 20 July 1938.
Here is the page from the Garrard ledger, from Menkes, for a Diamond and Opal Tiara.
This tiara was also designed with various elements to be removed and swapped about - including "large single Diamonds to complete the Ornament when a lighter and more simple Tiara is required".
I wonder what that ever looked like.
