    Re: Mourning jewels Archived Message

Mourning jewels are rarely seen on pictures, as mourning people usually do not make photosessions. And the tradition of long mourning periods, during which only dark jewels are allowed, tend to disappear. Nowadays, mourning royal or princely ladies usually just wear black clothes with "normal" diamond and/or pearl jewels.

I have these two pictures of the late Princess Lilian of Sweden, Duchess of Halland, wearing black jewels. I do not know when and for which occasion these pictures were taken, so I do not know if Princess Lilian was really mourning or if she decided to wear these jewels just because she wanted to...

There is also a mourning tiara, made of black jet, in the collection of Malmaison Castle, the former private home of Empress Joséphine of the French, now a museum (in Rueil-Malmaison, near Paris). The tiara belonged to Joséphine's daughter, Hortense, Queen of Holland. It was bequeathed in 1837 by Queen Hortense to her lady-in-waiting, Valérie Masuver, whose descendants gave it to the Malmaison Museum in 1939.

PS: I share your grief and that of the Australian people, and all other people concerned by the Ukrainian air catastrophe. Here in France, we have just learnt a few hours ago that another plane, from Air Algeria, with dozens of French people on board, had gone missing during its flight scheduled between Ouagadougou (Burkina-Faso) and Algiers (Algeria)...
