    Speaking of rubies... Archived Message

Posted by Brock on September 3, 2014, 6:53 pm, in reply to "Re: More rubies belonging to Queen Mary"

Speaking of rubies, I was in the office of the Lt. Gov. of Ontario this afternoon and noticed a new Canadian portrait of the Queen which, to the best of my knowledge, has not been released to the public. (This was in one of the leather presentation frames HM gives as gifts). Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity to snap a picture of the portrait but in it HM is wearing the Burmese Ruby Tiara, the Crown Ruby necklace, diamond earrings, the Maple Leaf Brooch and the Sovereign's badge of the Order of Canada.

There was a matching portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh and both appeared to have been taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, so perhaps they were taken in the same session as the recent "double fringe" New Zealand series.

: The auction catalogue of Princess Margaret's
: jewels had another item of jewellery
: belonging to Queen Mary containing rubies.
: According to the notes, this ring was given
: to her by Edward VII. I doubt if either her
: husband or her father-in-law would have
: given her items with rubies if she didn't
    : like the gemstone.
: I suspect that the story of her associating
: rubies with the death of the Duke of
: Clarence emerged as people tried to explain
: why she was never photographed wearing the
    : Oriental circle tiara.
