Japanese imperial jewels: why always "white" jewels? Archived Message

Posted by Arthur on October 2, 2014, 5:00 pm, in reply to "Re: Princess Noriko of Takamado parure"

The Empress of Japan and the princesses of the Imperial Family own a lot of beautiful jewels (tiaras, necklaces, brooches...), which often combine modern and classical design.

But I am surprised and puzzled that all these jewels are always white (diamonds, or pearls and diamonds) or gold. No coloured stones (emeralds, rubies, sapphires...).

Here is an illustration (New Year's reception on 1st January 2005):

Does anyone familiar with Japanese culture know the reason for this situation? Are coloured stones considered inappropriate, for whatever reason?

Thanks in advance for your information,

    Arthur
