Silver polish in 19th century was most times pumice powder in various degrees of fineness and further processing: either as a powder, as a solid cake or as a paste. An alternative was to use ashes. A soft (damped) cloth or a soft brush similar to a toothbrush was used to apply. After polishing residues were cleaned with water. No problems with gemstones, but obviously one had to be more careful with pearls.
