    They are ruby earrings, indeed, and were worn occasionally by the Queen. I think they appeared in the late 1960s/early 1970s. I have no indication about the origin of this pair of earrings.

    They are here worn in May 1972 in Paris, during the return dinner hosted by the Queen in honour of French President Georges Pompidou, during her second State visit to France:


    The rubies are removable, and the Queen has worn the earrings in both versions (with and without the rubies).

    The Queen has loaned/given (?) these earrings to the Countess of Wessex, who has worn them (without the rubies) at the wedding service of Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Christopher O'Neill in June 2013:
