You have raised some very interesting questions Brock.
I am sure that the central sapphire element is removable, as to have the Durbar emerald brooch somehow perched in front of the sapphire would be a clumsy look. Queen Mary's taste would, I believe, preclude such an amateurish conversion.
You have raised an interesting idea regarding the provenance of this tiara. Field raised another by saying that Queen Mary gave the tiara to QEQM. Yet, QEQM was never photographed wearing it in public. All that we know at present is that Princess Margaret wore it for a time. I have often wondered if the tiara was inherited by The Queen, who lent it to her sister. More mysteries for us!
