    Happy Victoria Day! Archived Message

Today is the anniversary of the birthday of Queen Victoria who was born on May 24, 1819.

We still celebrate Victoria Day in Canada as the (current) Queen's "official" birthday.

We actually celebrated "Victoria Day Weekend" or "May Two-Four" last week with a long weekend including a statutory holiday Monday. Victoria Day is celebrated on the first Monday before May 24 making this year the earliest it can be celebrated as May 24th is on a Sunday.

In celebration, I thought I would share with you, one of Canada's tributes to QEII for her Diamond Jubilee - It is the Diamond Jubilee Window.

This stained glass window is installed above the Senate Chamber entrance to the Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

At the top is the Crown of St. Edward - the Coronation Crown.

Next are the Royal Cyphers of QV and QEII under which are portraits of the 2 Diamond Queens.

Below that, some obligatory Maple Leaves followed by the Queens' Coats of Arms and at the bottom, a depiction of the Canadian Parliament Building as they looked during the Diamond Jubilee year of each queen.

Here is the Royal Jewels link.....

The portraits of the two monarchs show both of them wearing the Coronation Diamond Necklace and Earrings as well as a tiara.

Queen Victoria's tiara is a fringe probably styled after this picture of QV.

The tiara worn by QEII is a stylized version of the George IV Diadem - only Canadianized using Maple Leaves and Snow Flakes in place of the cross patees and floral elements. I think it could look great in real life.

Here are a couple of links for additional information.
