I do not know if this could be the explanation for the Countess of Strathmore not wearing a coronet at her son-in-law and daughter's coronation, but, according to Wikipedia (I know...), "As the queen consort's father, [the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne] was created a Knight of the Garter and Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in the Coronation Honours of 1937". Before that, the Earl was "only" an Earl in the Peerage of Scotland. So maybe that, at the time of the Coronation, the Earl's wife was still not entitled to wear a peeress' coronet? But I admit I am not familiar with the soooo complex British honour system... Or maybe that the then 74-year-old Countess just found the coronet too heavy for her?
