I have always been intrigued about references to Queen Victoria's opal necklace, as I have never seen an image or photo of this. Could Queen Victoria be wearing an opal necklace in this image? http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portraitLarge/mw145622/Queen-Victoria?LinkID=mp04634&search=sas&sText=Queen+Victoria&wPage=17&role=sit&rNo=359 This has caught my eye because the stones depicted in the necklace do not have the regular cut or shape of many other precious stones and, as we know, opals are not often shaped as evenly sized stones; rather their brilliance comes from stones in their natural shape being polished. It also seems to me that this necklace has some aspects which mirror those in the tiara the Queen is wearing, and this is characteristic of designs which Prince Alfred made. (In this, I am thinking of the sapphire tiara and necklace which eventually went to Princess Mary, daughter of George V and Queen Mary) This is just a suggestion to add to our discussions.
