Some more photos 1. A side view of QEQM at the opening of Parliament in Canberra in 1927 http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=3050052 If this photo is enlarged another view of the opal brooch can be seen. This reinforces my suspicion that this opal could be the so called Imperial opal which was offered to Edward VII, as the size seems to fit. A diamond brooch on the then Duchess' hat can be seen. Perhaps some posters may be able to identify it. The clothes described in the media reports which say the then Duchess of York was wearing a large uncut opal and diamond brooch are indeed those she wore for the opening of Parliament in Canberra in 1927 and are the same as those in the initial photo I posted. http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=11399744 If Edward VII accepted the "Imperial opal" and it was set in a brooch, it would have been seen as appropriate for the then Duchess of York to wear it for the opening of Parliament in Canberra in 1927, as the stone was an Australian gem offered by an Australian. Unfortunately, so far I cannot find proof in the Australian papers that the King did accept the gemstone. Perhaps there is something in the British press. I believe that we have identified an opal brooch worn by QEQM which we have not previously discussed. Only the provenance of the opal is uncertain.
