Hi Beth What I have learned about Black Opals comes from the site below, but I find this quote the most relevant So the proper definition of the Black Opal is "the opal which has the colours with a black or a grey base". It is all about the base which we cannot see as the stones are set into the brooch. I am inclined to believe the contemporary news reports. Black opals are quite rare and it makes sense to me that a wedding gift from an Australian organization would have the very best opals in the world in the brooch. We must agree to disagree Beth.
