What an interesting thread, thank you Baxter. I had tried to find if there was earlier information on the board, but I did not find that thread. When I saw your side by side photo comparison, I immediately noticed more differences (other than what I had initially perceived) between the two brooches. First - The sapphire in the Russian sapphire brooch sits proud of the outer diamond surround (significantly so), which suggests to me that it is either a very deep stone or has been deliberately set that way to make the sapphire more prominent. (If we could see the brooch in reality, I think that the amount of gold immediately next to the sapphire must be striking) Secondly, I feel that the stone in the second brooch sits lower against the outer circle of diamonds, even though it also sits proud. I also believe that the outer diamond setting has more and smaller diamonds than in the outer setting of the Russian sapphire brooch. I still feel that the sapphire in the second brooch you posted a photo of is a larger and more elongated oval Whether the second brooch is the one the Queen Mother gave to Diana, Princess of Wales, is obviously something people will debate, but it seems a possible match to me. I keep wishing that the Royal Collection researchers would provide more information, but that would deprive us of the pleasure of trying to piece things together from the clues we can gleam.
