Here are a few more details from the evening at the Quai d'Orsay, Thursday 21 July 1938, as The Times newspaper reported it, 'After their return from Versailles the King and Queen had two hours to rest before getting ready for the dinner given in their honour by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mme Bonnet. One Hundred and Fifty guests were invited to this dinner, which took place in the state rooms beneath their Majesties' apartments.....After dinner a reception was held, to which 500 further guests had been invited. In the Salle de L'Horloge a stage had been erected on which theatrical and musical entertainments were given by some of the best known singers and actors of Paris.... Before returning to the state apartments shortly before midnight their Majesties appeared on the upper balcony of the Quai d'Orsay, and were received with frenzied cheers by the densely packed crowd below...' When The Times reported the King and Queen's return to London the next day it also carried a small report near the bottom of a page ' Mrs Ronald Greville who is seriously ill at her house in Charles Street, was stated to be very much better.' Probably improved on getting news that the Queen had paraded some of her famous jewels on the State Visit to France !! --Previous Message-- : Thanks, Nellie, for correcting me. The return : dinner took place at the British embassy, : though the royal couple was hosted at the : Quai d'Orsay. : : Unless we see a clear picture of the dinner : at the Quai d'Orsay, I will remain sceptical : about QEQM wearing the Greville jewels : before Mrs Greville's death in 1942. None of : the available and reliable sources (notably : Hugh Roberts in The Queen's Diamonds ) ever : mentioned such an hypothesis. : : Considering the jewels worn by Queen : Elizabeth before WW2, and the amount of : jewels retained until her death in 1953 by : Queen Mary, a plausible option for the third : night in Paris could be Queen Mary's Fringe : tiara (I suppose it is the tiara refered to : as the "sunray tiara" in Merlin's : post), or the Teck crescent tiara. : : Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara: : : : : : :
