My source has many large pages of information on this crown so here are just some bits and pieces. Hired jewels were used for its first appearance for the coronation of Charles II on 23 April 1661 - possibly diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls, but essential records of the time have been lost so we cannot be more definite. The mounts were probably made to fit each original hired jewel then filled with pastes for displaying the crown between coronations. It is possible that (some) temporary mounts were used later for hired jewels, then the original mounts, with pastes, wired back on after a coronation. "It is also possible that some mounts were transferred to St Edward's Crown from the Crown of State when the latter was finally broken up in 1704." There is quite a lot about the enamelling. Next for James II, the crown was set with 614 diamonds great and small, 12 rubies 7 sapphires, 10 emeralds, 444 pearls. Next for William III, 680 stones. "Mary had to be content with her stepmother's Crown." Not clear the crown used next for Queen Anne though possible St Edward's was refurbished and taken to the Abbey. For George I, 120 large and small diamonds, four rubies, sapphires and emeralds. George II is unrecorded but possibly mainly diamonds. George III not known. For George IV "no attempt was made to dress the crown with hired jewels". It was possibly not used to crown any of the Hanoverian kings. The crown was not reset for William III. Not used to crown Queen Victoria. Edward VII had planned to use it but did not for health reasons at the time. Remade in 1911 and set with permanent stones. Used to crown each monarch from then on.
