I suspect that a lot of what is in the New Zealand article is a journalistic fairy tale; in particular, the reference to the the Duchess of Teck's pearls and emeralds. I know virtually nothing about her pearls, but the reference to her emeralds seems wrong, as we now know that her son inherited them and they were subsequently purchased, after his death, by Queen Mary.
