I am hoping we can avoid confusion between various labels relating to Queen Alexandra's necklaces with pearls and emeralds.
Franck and Maridje have described a necklace of pearls, emeralds and rubies made by Cartier in 1901 for Queen Alexandra and Maridge placed a description under the heading of "Indian necklace".
Then, under the heading "QEQM's ruby and diamond floral brooches and sapphire brooch" Joye mentioned an "Indian necklace" of pearls and emeralds and referred to Leslie Field's book page 96. Nellie kindly posted a photo of Queen Alexandra wearing the necklace in question, so that we would all know what was referred to.
Field says that the necklace was given to Queen Alexandra as a wedding gift in 1863 and was worn by Queen Alexandra to the Devonshire House ball in 1897, so obviously it is different from the 1901 Cartier necklace to which Maridje and Franck referred.
It is the 1901 Cartier necklace for which I have been trying to find references, post 1901.
The necklace to which Joye referred may be the one Queen Alexandra, as Princess of Wales, is said to have worn at Courts pre-1901.
For example:
On 7 June 1866 p 9,The Times reported that she had worn a gold tiara with diamond stars and Indian ornaments of emeralds, pearls and diamonds.
On 22 February 1871 p. 12 The Times reported Queen Alexandra, as Princess of Wales, wearing a small tiara of emeralds and diamonds and Indian ornaments of diamonds, emeralds and pearls.
What ever term posters decided to give to the 1901 Cartier creation, I think we need to get our terminology sorted out otherwise we are going to create great confusion for ourselves. Perhaps at the very least we should include 'Cartier 1901' in the reference.
