The firm's first commission for an Indian-style piece came not from an Indian client, but from Queen Alexandra in 1901. Cartier was asked to reset Indian jewellery in the Royal Collection for the Queen to wear with three Indian gowns sent to her by Mary Curzon, wife of the Viceroy of india. Cartier Paris (the London branch was not opened until 1902) created a necklace of pearls, emeralds, rubies and two square emeralds described as 'talismans', suggesting that they were carved."
