    Source: Library of Congress.

When I typed acrot, queen in the subject line on the newspaper collection through the Library of Congress, nothing resulted. But when I typed acrot alone, there are many mentions which I thought was too much to wade through so I narrowed it to acrot diamonds and got just three results.

One of these results was the "Whig Standard" (Washington, D.C.), dated November 8, 1844 (page 2).

Quote: "It is stated that the jewelry worn by the Marquis of Westminister at the installation of Louis Philippe to the order of the garter, was of the most superb character. In the centre of his lordship's badge was the celebrated Arcot diamond, valued at 15,000 guineas. His lordship's sword also displayed a massive diamond, one of the largest in the world, weighing 96 carats, and valued at (My Notes: English money symbol which is not on my keyboard) 29,000 (or 20,000.....the number 9 and 0 looked similar so I was not sure which one is correct). The same nobleman has laborers on his estates who have to support themselves, wives, and children, on about two dollars per week, and provisions near thirty percent higher than in this country."

    End of quote.

From another newspaper "The Daily Madisonian" (Washington, D.C.), dated November 8, 1844 (page 2):

It mentioned the same things as above except it also added the facts that:

****the Arcot diamond was set by Messrs. Storr and Mortimer.
****it was valued at (English money symbol) 25,000.
****the sword was once owned by Emperor Napoleon.

It mentioned the following people who were present when Louis Philippe, king of the French, was about to be installed to the order of the Garter:

    *Queen Victoria
    *Prince Albert (the consort)
    *The Duke of Cambridge
    *The Duke of Rutland
    *The Duke of Wellington
    *The Marquess of Anglesey
    *The Duke of Devonshire
    *The Marquess of Exeter
    *The Duke of Buccleuch
    *The Marquess of Lansdowne
    *The Marquess of Westminister
    *The Duke of Beaufort
    *The Duke of Buckingham
    *The Marquess of Salisbury

King Philippe wore a dark blue uniform with gold epauiettes and appointments.

Queen Victoria wore the mantle of the Order of the Garter as a bracelet and a diamond tiara.

100 guests, including the Queen, Albert, the French king, all knights of the Order of the Garter and a large party of nobility and gentry (including some Cabinet ministers) attended the banquet at St. George's Hall, Windsor, in honor of this event later that evening after the installation ceremony.

    The end.

: Here is a link to another, rather long,
: article on the Arcots. It does have a
: picture quite a long way down with an
: opinion that it may show Queen Charlotte
: wearing the diamonds. Just somebody's
: opinion of course. In this picture I am more
: interested in the bow brooch, which I still
: wonder whether it is one of the brooches
: lost to the Hanover Bequest.
