Another factor which makes me inclined to accept what Sian Evans says is that, while trying to find a newspaper report of the 1936 gift of pearls, I noticed that, whenever Mrs Greville's movements or attendance at some function were noted, there is usually mention of the fact that the King and Queen spent part of their honeymoon at Polesden Lacey or that she and the Queen were great friends. Obviously, Mrs Greville was into self publicity. So, I think it is more than likely that she placed the story with one paper in the hope that others would repeat it. --Previous Message-- : Yes. Sian Evans specifically writes: : : "Her will, dated 27 March 1942, makes : fascinating reading." Lots of : information about bequests to servants, : members of her social circle, and family. : Mrs Greville's estate would be worth : 39,000,000 pounds in today's values (2013). : : I would agree that it makes sense to accept : that Mrs Greville gave the three-strand : pearls to the Queen in 1936 given the access : the author has had. It is not stated but to : me this was a personal Coronation gift to : the Queen. : : : : --Previous Message-- : Very interesting, thank you Laura. : : Because of the access the author had to : archival papers, I am inclined to accept : that Mrs Greville gave the 3 strand pearl : necklace to QEQM in 1936, even though I : recollect others disputing that. : : Great to read the actual quotes. I don't : recollect Shawcross having said anything : about jewels over the value of one hundred : pounds, although he too speaks of 60 pieces : -- so this author obviously had access to : the will. : : : :
