Queen Alexandra's emerald tiara Archived Message

Franck's recent post on the jewels made by Cartier for various members of the British Royal family highlighted that Queen Alexandra had a number of jewels about which we are largely ignorant.

In particular, Queen Alexandra had tiaras about which little is known. There is a sapphire tiara, the Cartier fleur de lys tiara and an emerald tiara.

The Times 22 February 1871 p. 12 reported that, at a Court function, the Princess of Wales wore a "small tiara of emeralds and diamonds" and Indian ornaments of diamonds, emeralds and pearls.

In the mega Munn p. 104 Munn quotes Lady Monkswell whose description of Queen Alexandra, at an evening function at the Foreign Office on Queen Victoria's official birthday in 1894, was -
"Her hair most beautifully done with a splendid diamond tiara with great emeralds in it..."

Unless Queen Alexandra added emerald elements to her wedding tiara (as she did star elements seen in the photo below) then it seems likely that she had another tiara unknown to us.
It seems highly unlikely that Queen Alexandra might have worn Queen Victoria's emerald tiara in 1894 as we now know that QV gave it to her daughter, Princess Louise, in June 1893. See http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/thread/1404992278.html
