I suspect that is just an optical illusion which may be a result of the angle at which the diamonds have been photographed and the level of inclusions, or impurities, in each diamond. I would like to see more evidence before I concluded that both diamonds have a "hole". I suspect neither has a hole. Apart from anything else, the blackish segment in the centre in both photos has a very different shape. I cannot say categorically that these are 2 different gemstones as I have not seen sufficient evidence (and I could not say anything based just on photos; even a gemologist would be challenged unless he/she could compare both diamonds) but personally I would like to see more evidence and opinions. One of the more important aspect would be an opinion from gemologists about the carat weight of the two diamonds. Presumably, any experts would have to guess the carat weight of the diamond in the Imperial jewel, but the one offered for sale should be easier to gauge. The family history of the diamond being auctioned also seems to belie the probability of this being a Romanov gem. But who knows? We simply don't have enough history about the dispersal of the Romanov jewels. It is possible - but I would like to see more information. Sorry to be a bore PJ. --Previous Message-- : I was looking at Nellie's picture and the one : from Skinners and I have to say they are the : same both have the hole in the center. : PJ : : --Previous Message-- : : Dmitry - is this - : : * the link to Skinners? : : * the tiara?
