I agree with you Dmitry. Oral history is tricky and how interpretations vary even more so. For a diamond of such a size, it would be highly probably that the family would have some documentation either for the purchase or from when the gem was at various jewellery firms over the years. Anything pre the Russian revolution would rule out the one being auctioned being an Imperial gemstone. Jinja, thank you for explaining the meaning of the word hole in this context. I had never heard of the term before being familiar only with the term culet. How language usage can confuse us. --Previous Message-- : I think we need to consider the likelihood of : two apparently similar sized diamonds, of : the same cut, with the same : larger-than-average cutlet. : : Family history can be quite wrong at times. : For instance, if the story was that it was : from a tiara made in the 1800's, that could : (over time) become "we acquired it in : the 1800s" that kind of thing. : : Speculation, of course, but one with some : teeth, as it were. : : : --Previous Message-- : A jeweler once explained to me that old cut : diamonds let light escape through the point : of the diamond, while new cut diamonds : reflect the light, making the diamond more : brilliant. What looks like a hole is the : area where the light passes out the back of : the diamond instead of reflecting like the : rest of the stone. This is not a physical : hole. : : :
