According to Getty the photo is from the funeral of Pope Paul VI in 1978 but, after thinking about Pedro's comment, I am not sure if the Getty caption is correct. Getty also says that the following shows Queen Sofia at the funeral of Pope Paul VI in 1978. But a photo from Bridgeman shows Queen Sofia and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte on the same occasion. Bridgeman says only that it is a religious ceremony in 1978. As the clergy are in white, it is possible that this occasion is not the funeral of Pope Paul VI but, as the Pope's funeral was the first of the modern Papal funerals, the white vestments may not indicate anything other than the change in thinking about symbolism in Catholic funerals. But it was not the Investiture of Pope John Paul I in September 1978 as we can see the royal ladies in different dresses and jewels on that occasion. Investiture of Pope John Paul I September 1978 Queen Sofia on a visit to the Vatican 1977 Queen Sofia on a visit to the Vatican in 1962 before becoming Queen and gaining the privilege of wearing white. Pearls against her black dress and mantilla makes them really stand out. I wonder if SydneyLux has any information which might help us identify if the Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte attended the funeral of Pope Paul VI in 1978, what colour she wore and most importantly what jewels she may have worn. I am not familiar with the pearl brooch Queen Sofia wore on two of the occasions above. Can anyone enlighten me, please?
