Princess Mary of Cambridge, later Duchess of Teck, was also reported to have worn a tiara on a number of occasions prior to her marriage. Like Princesses Beatrice and Louise, she also wore various individual jewels in her hair; some of these were stars, although on several occasions these were noted to be on a tiara or a band of diamonds - so resembling a tiara. The first occasion which I identified her wearing a tiara (but this may not be accurate as I have not done a complete, systematic search of the newspapers) was via a report in the Times 30 May 1856 when she attended a Drawing Room. She was said to have worn a circlet of diamonds with diamond stars mounted at the front. After that she was regularly reported to have worn either a diamond tiara or a tiara with stars, although at times she also wore wreaths of flowers with diamonds. As she was born on 27 November 1933, she was 22 years old in May 1856, the month in which I found a report of her wearing a tiara. Perhaps the concept that unmarried ladies did not wear tiaras applied only to very young females as, obviously, the rule did not apply to Princesses over a certain age. The most interesting report of Princess Mary's head jewels I found was in a report dated 25 June 1857 when, for a State Ball, she wore diamond roses in her headdress. I wondered if they could have been the diamond roses she inherited from her aunt, Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester who died in April that year. According to Roberts, these inherited roses were eventually incorporated into the Teck tiara.
