Thank you Nellie for the information that Queen Victoria left the small diamond crown to the Crown.

It is strange that it has not appeared on any of the previous lists.

I checked the list given by Arthur http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/archive/1405776855.html and the addition made to that list by Nellie http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/archive/1405777541.html

It is very obvious from photographic records that Queen Alexandra retained the small diamond crown, as we have a photographic record of her wearing it in 1913

plus an illustration of QA wearing it for an Opera performance during the Danish State Visit in 1914.

Like Nellie, I feel that the authors of the Crown Jewels may have been mistaken, and I wonder if they confused Queen Victoria's Regal circlet with the small diamond crown, as it is obvious that Queen Alexandra did hand over the Regal circlet, as there is photographic evidence of Queen Mary wearing it - see below.
[Queen Mary wearing the Regal circlet for the first Opening of Parliament for the reign of George V]

and subsequently had her own made, as can be seen in the illustration from the Danish State Visit in 1914 where both Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra are wearing Regal circlets. We also have the information from Roberts that Queen Alexandra had her own Regal circlet made.

Unfortunately, so far, the newspapers have not provided any further clues to help us solve this mystery.

: I certainly believe it was never worn by
: Queen Mary, and I have never seen a pic of
    : her wearing it.
    :
: There are references in Pope-Hennessy:
    :
: " 'Alix retaining the lovely little
: Crown I do not approve of', wrote the Grand
    : Duchess." referring to correspondence
: between Queen Mary and her Aunt Augusta.
    :
: About her first State Opening of Parliament,
: Queen Mary wrote "What I liked best was
: wearing Grandmama's crown..." which is
: believed refers to what we now call Queen
: Victoria's Regal Circlet. Photos taken in
: the robing room at Parliament House show
: Queen Mary wearing that circlet.

: The word crown was used frequently for any
: full circle head ornament, and even by some
    : jewellery manufacturers today.
    :
: Edit added: The Crown Jewels 1998 states
    : "Queen Victoria, appreciating its
: importance, left the piece to the
    : Crown."
: Also "Queen Alexandra relinquished it
: reluctantly to Queen Mary some months after
: the death of Edward VII in 1910 and
: continued to look upon it with a
: proprietorial eye." though I feel this
    : is now an error.
: Also "In 1937, King George VI added the
: Crown to the Regalia in the Tower, though it
: has never been used at a coronation
    : ceremony."
