    What an interesting topic. Unfortunately I cannot find a photo showing the back of the tiara.

    From the photo below it looks as if the inner, upper frame work goes to either end of the jewel and is joined to the lower inner section of the frame. It is just possible to see the mechanism for releasing the tension so that the frame can be removed. I suspect that the frame clips onto the metal work at the rear of some of the upright diamond elements. My understanding is that the inner frame is constructed to give the tiara a particular shape, and when removed would allow such a jewel to be worn as a necklace curving around the contours of a neck. (I hope my phraseology makes sense.)




    Queen Mary's 1919 fringe tiara has a similar inner, upper band. The photo below shows the frame more clearly, and that the upper and lower portions of the frame are joined.
