I can definitely see the resemblance Helen, but I am still puzzled. Because HM was photographed wearing the badge or brooch in Ottawa in 1939, I will give some details of the Canadian Black Watch first. [Note: The Black Watch in Canada is also referred to as the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada http://www.blackwatchcanada.com/ I presume that QEQM is wearing the badge of the Regiment in the photo on their archive.] Below are some images which may help identification. Black Watch Canada - Officers cap badge A cap badge from WWII era found at http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/id,308311365,var,Cap-badge-The-Black-Watch-Royal-Highland-Regiment-of-Canada,language,E.html I have seen a cap badge with dark blue enamel http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-ORIGINAL-PLATINUM-BADGE-INSIGNIA-BLACK-WATCH-ROYAL-HIGHLANDERS-OF-CANADA-/190723561971 which seems similar to the dark border seen on HM brooch/badge in the photo taken in Ottawa in 1939; however, there are so many differences that I suspect this is different from the badge/brooch worn in 1939. Nevertheless none of the badges I have seen are precisely the same as what HM wore in Canada in 1939. Below are some photos of HM wearing what I think is her badge for the Black Watch in Canada. All taken on 6 July 1989. It appears that HM is wearing a second badge on the centre of her bodice but the details do not show clearly in the photos. Black Watch UK The cap badge of the Black Watch UK is very similar to that of the Canadian regiment. HM became Colonel-in-Chief in 1937 so I presume she would have been presented with a badge at the time or soon after. http://theblackwatch.co.uk/history-and-research/royal-colonels/ Here is a formal portrait belonging to the Black Watch Museum so I think HM is wearing their badge. http://artuk.org/discover/artworks/the-queen-mother-19002002-128421 --Previous Message-- : To me it looks very much like the regimental : badge of the Black Watch - a regiment very : close to the heart of the Queen Mum as her : brothers served in it & she lost one of : her brothers in 1915. :
