I have had a very interesting time reading the opinions of those who have posted in this thread. Many thanks to all. I always learn something new from the viewpoint of others.

Because of what Clementine said her in her post, I believe that my original post has been misunderstood by her. For the record: I was not writing about any of my posts having been misused. The one instance I have discovered of my work being used is so trivial that I have not bothered to contact the blogger.

I agree with Clementine that anyone can read a newspaper. Today, as Clementine noted, most research on newspapers is done via internet based sites or electronic databases which many (but not all) can access freely. As Clementine so rightly pointed out anyone could have read the same item.

The issue I was trying to highlight was not about what constitutes research, or whether a snippet from a newspaper is re-used, but what others do with the deductions made by a poster when those deductions have been based on specific research and/or personal observations and intellectual evaluation. I did not specify the posts or identify the posters whose work has been ripped off; that would not be fair, as some people would not wish to be embroiled in controversy. Nevertheless, when I see an image with specific markings initially posted by a RJWMB member there is no doubt that the poster's intellectual property has been ripped off.

We all have different opinions. Being an academic historian, I value the work of others (even if I personally disagree with their findings), will continue to champion their rights, and make no apologies for doing so.

Perhaps by airing the issue we can encourage/shame others into respecting the work of members of this board. Plagiarism is always plagiarism. Someone will always recognise it. Perhaps the best weapon we can use is to express our disdain for bloggers who engage in it. But I do not advocate that we name such bloggers.

: A point about research. Many newspapers and
