The following message was sent to me and I have forwarded it to the Administrator but it seems not have been included in this thread by now, so I post it here, on behalf of David who, according to his message: * is not a member of this board, but would be so grateful if you would pass this on to the thread on the Royal Jewels message board labelled "This day in 1867".
" .. This pearl and diamond stomacher is the most important piece of Queen Mary's jewels that has not been discussed, she considered it to be of exceptional importance, hence she wore it on a number of important occassions.
It is my belief that it came from Princess Mary Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh, God-mother of Princess Mary Adelaide. She was not only the child of King George III but also the wife the 2nd. Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, however she died childless, so it is not unreasonable to speculate that she left her jewels to her God-daughter.
It has always intrigued me that the cash strapped Teck's were able to provide Mary with jewels, e.g. the Turquoise set. If this is what happened it would go a long way to answering this question.
Given the abundance of the collections of the Old Duchess of Cambridge it would be reasonable to assume that Princess Mary had an equally substantial collection.
