Queen Mary's sun brooches Archived Message

Among Queen Mary's wedding presents were two sun brooches. The one we are most familiar with is the Warwick sun brooch, so named because it was the gift of the Earl and Countess of Warwick.

The citizens of Bath gave HM another.

Despite searching in a variety of libraries, museums and photo repositories, I have not found the photo mentioned in the report. I hope that someone may have come across the image and can post it.

Queen Mary does not appear to have been photographed wearing either brooch in the conventional way as a brooch.

Since finding the report I have looked at photos of QM wearing a sun brooch as a hair ornament more closely. I think that the 2 below show different brooches.

This photo taken at Brocket Hall in July 1898 may show the Bath sun brooch.

A close up detail suggests to me that this brooch does not have the long rows of diamonds between the wider rays as can be seen in the Warwick brooch. I also think that some of the rays are wavy whereas in the Warwick brooch they are all straight.

I would be interested to know what others think. Perhaps my eye is playing tricks on me!

I think that the sun brooch in the photo below is the Warwick sun brooch.
