The secret of the Tiara The fate of the Prussian-Greek gem has long been regarded as uncertain. After more than four decades, it now appeared again. She was the shining star of the evening, after all heads craned. The opulent tiara which graced the head of Marie-Chantal of Greece, 43, seemed for over four decades swallowed by the earth.
The Crown Princess wore the diamond jewelery piece now at the beginning of the year together with an emerald velvet dress at the gala for the 40th Jubilee of Denmarks Queen Margrethe II.
Frequently had already been speculated that valuable gem was sold or broken up. The tiara that Sophie of Prussia in 1889 was given by her mother, Empress Victoria of Germany, at the wedding of Crown Prince Constantine of Greece, was most recently seen on 18th September 1964. On that day Queen Frederica wore the tiara to the wedding of her son, King Constantine II, the father of Marie-Chantal's husband, Pavlos, 44. In the 1930s, had her sister, Helen of Romania, liked to decorate herself with the precious heirloom. A part of the puzzle is now solved so: the tiara is intact and continues to be - or is again - property of the Greek royal family. But why it was kept under wraps for so long - that remains a closely guarded secret. S. Petersen
P.S.: Not much new information, I am afraid ...
Re: Queen Frederica's tiara - Royal magazine report
Thanks a lot Veronika for sharing this article with us, I always find interesting to talk about Queen Frederica's jewels. She did not have a lot of jewels, but her emeralds & diamonds parure and her rubies & diamonds set were quite impressive. And so was this diamond tiara we are talking about, and her huge sapphire.
Re: Queen Frederica's tiara - Royal magazine report
thank you Veronica for the scan...We might never know the true story behind the reappearance of this tiara, but I hope we'll get to see it from now on much more often, at least in Denmark
my only personal wish is for Marie Chantal to either change that very visible base or cover up with the hairdo...its quite distracting from this gorgeous piece

Agreed. The whole (re) appearance was a bit of a disappointment for me. How on earth can you wear a tiara like that? Seriously! The tiara is already overwelming her and with that huge base, it looked like it was taking off any second or about to slide over her head. Not a success. People were stunned to see the tiara again and were focussed on that but the piece does not suit her very well. Truly a stunning piece but one has to know (or be told) which pieces to wear and how to wear them. Perhaps with a different hairdo and a lowered base ....perhaps.

Other sources (can't remember which one) have suggested that it was a wedding present for kaiser Wilhelm. And I think it was mentioned here earlier that the tiara last was seen in Madrid in 1966.

I have to agree that I was thrilled to see this long absent tiara, but I was so disappointed at the way Marie Chantal wore this stunning piece. At the very least, she could have added some hair pieces to her hair to cover the base. I kept thinking as I viewed the photos that it was going to slide off her head. --Previous Message-- : Other sources (can't remember which one) have : suggested that it was a wedding present for : kaiser Wilhelm.
