If you want to book tickets (don't turn up without) telephone & don't rely on the online site, which often says that there is only limited times available. When you speak to a person they usually say "Oh no, we have ample capacity on that day..." and you get the ones you want. I know three people where that happened. (PS - I got mine"!)
I used to work as part of the Visitor services team; and I can tell you that the system involves a lot of queueing, no matter if you look well in advance or not.
Having worked there, and knowing the system. My top tips are, prebook and have your tickets posted to you where possible.
You often still have to queue for 20 min + just to collect your tickets on busy days; so have your tickets before.
Also, if you can afford it, the best ticket is 'The Royal Day-out' which is a joint ticket for the State Rooms, The Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews.
This is the best, as the tickets for the State Rooms and the Royal Mews are not timed; therefore you can go in whenever you want, as be aware if you have a timed ticket you cannot go in before that time and it is discouraged to even queue up before that allotted time. So an anytime entry is most advised.
Thanks for the useful tips, but I've spent hours on end waiting to see royal (and other) events (like the King Tut exhibition in the 1970's - 7 hour wait for that one!!) that a mere 20 minutes is of no consequence for me at all
I'm sure others will take not and benefit from your wisdom.
You are lucky to see the exhibition and hope you will start threads about it. (sorry out of topic I ordered via e-bay UK royal Jubilee items) .

Agreed - I'd do it again tomorrow, and my husband still regrets missing it. Even friends who have seen the items on display in Egypt since say it is not well displayed there - but it sure was in London...
--Previous Message-- : The King Tut exhibit was worth the wait! And : all the gold we saw makes it almost on : topic, too. :
Oh I would say discussing King Tut's gold most definitely is on topic. He was a King and the exhibition includes huge amounts of rings, bangles, pectorals and circlets all made in gold (of course) and set with glorious coloured stones such as turquoise, amber and jet.
(can you tell I'm a fan !)

I saw it in New Orleans, and since it was the last day of the exhibit, there was a jazz funeral in the driveway while we waited, moving from tent to tent and buying Cajun food as we got closer to the entrance. I wish I could remember all of the objects and jewelry. I remember the gold statues best. I do still have the exhibit booklet. jinja

My family and I visited the King Tut exhibition in Chicago some summers ago and we enjoyed it very much!
